Mercedes-AMG C43

The Mercedes-AMG C43 has always occupied an interesting space in the AMG lineup. With the introduction of the controversial C63 SE—ditching the beloved 4.0L V8 in favour of a hybrid 2.0L four-cylinder—many enthusiasts have been left questioning where the C43 now stands. However, after taking the C43 on a road trip from Johannesburg to East London, we can confidently say that the C43 is more than enough.

Having driven all AMG variants over the past two decades, the changes over the years are apparent. Most discussions focus on the downsizing of engines, but one of the most impressive changes is just how phenomenally stable these cars have become in the most challenging driving situations.

Today’s AMG models offer immense grip, allowing you to tackle demanding backroads at speeds that almost seem to defy physics. In the past, driving an SLK55, a W204 C63, or even the SLS at these speeds would have required excellent driving skills—they were lively machines that demanded respect. AMG has made these cars so well-engineered and accessible that most drivers can push them to their limits while still feeling safe and in control.

So yes, the engines may be smaller, and there’s some electrified magic involved, but AMGs remain fast, capable, and always willing to be pushed that little bit further.

With its turbocharged 2.0L four-cylinder engine producing 300 kW and 500 Nm of torque, the C43 delivers an exhilarating driving experience. The powertrain is paired with a 9-speed automatic gearbox and an all-wheel-drive system, ensuring maximum traction and control in all conditions. One of the standout features is the mild hybrid system, which assists with turbo lag and provides an additional 10 kW boost when needed. This technology enhances response times and ensures seamless power delivery.

These days, cars in this category are generally well-engineered, making the choice largely a matter of preference. However, the C43’s engineering is undeniable, making it well worth considering for those who appreciate precision and performance.

A significant concern with modern performance cars is the use of artificial engine sound augmentation. More often than not, it sounds fake and intrusive. However, Mercedes-AMG has struck the right balance in the C43. Combining enhanced speaker-generated notes and authentic pops and bangs from the exhaust creates a genuinely engaging sound experience. It adds character without feeling overdone, making full-throttle acceleration even more exciting.

The interior of the C43 is a matter of taste, but if you love modern digital interfaces, you’ll feel right at home. Highly customisable ambient lighting allows you to set the perfect mood, while the digital speedometer and infotainment system offer multiple configuration options, ensuring a personalised experience.

One standout feature is the Burmester sound system, which delivers exceptional clarity, particularly in the mid-and high ranges. While some may find the subwoofer’s low-end performance slightly lacking, this is only noticeable if you’re highly critical. The system offers various sound profiles, such as Pure and 3D, allowing drivers to fine-tune their listening experience.

For those seeking a fast, all-wheel-drive performance sedan with serious grip and driver engagement, the Mercedes-AMG C43 is a strong contender. It may lack the extreme hybrid powertrain of the new C63 SE, but for many enthusiasts, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

The C43 delivers the thrills, the luxury, and the everyday usability that make it a compelling package in today’s performance car market.
